Do you want to build a great community-driven space?

The word “community” gets thrown around a lot in the coworking industry, to the point that it’s lost its meaning. How do we change that, and how do you distinguish yourself?

Find answers to this question and more by checking out the video below. It’s a snippet of my video conversation with Tony Bacigalupo on YouTube (he is also a cowork consultant – collaboration at its finest:)).

In this video conversation, I talk with Tony Bacigalupo (also a cowork consultant – collaboration at its finest:)) about how you can shift the way you attract members. Learn more about what we’re up to by checking out the whole video series on YouTube here

What is community?

I define community as a supportive, inclusive, and inspiring connection between people with a shared mindset. It is intentionally created with transparency to facilitate equality, respect, and harmony by empowering participants through opportunity, accountability, and personal choice.

A TRUE Community Honors, Respects & Empowers its Members.

A truly thriving community is greater than the sum of its parts. In order to consistently magnify its culture, your community needs to be constantly growing, changing and evolving along with its membership. That’s where Flexible Sustainability comes in, and these are the types of communities I collaborate with. To get to the bottom of why that’s the case, we can look to basic human nature.

I’m honored to collaborate with the City of Geneva to create Port 100 (A Coworking Community in Geneva New York). In this video, a few members (who knew little about coworking before this project) talk about their coworking experience on the Inside the FLX Podcast.

Putting People First

To facilitate the creation of sustainable coworking communities, The Cowork Consultant collaborates with organizations that put people first by encouraging and empowering each participant to be his or her greatest self.

Coworking is all about community, right?

Well, it’s amazing how many community creators forget the basic building block. It’s people, clearly. But more importantly, it’s individuals.

In essence, we are hardwired to collaborate!

Let me start with a story about early human evolution.

As early man joined forces for a better chance of survival, our brains were stimulated by collaborative chemicals that amplified our stamina and endurance. Then, when our ancestors brought their harvest back to the community, their brains were stimulated again upon sharing their successful hunt with the rest of the clan. These positive feelings became the incentive to continue collaborating.

Please keep this in mind as I get into the concept of coworking…

So, what is coworking?

First, I’ll tell you what coworking is NOT.

Coworking is not a co-op. A co-op is a model where all participants own an organization and establish a pre-determined outcome.

Coworking is not an incubator. An incubator is a setup in which a governing body dictates a system that a member is required to follow.

Neither of these concepts achieves Flexible Sustainability.

There are two different types of coworking.

One is a real estate model.

It starts with space and adds people. An “owner” or “manager” finds a vacant space, remodels it, and fills it with as many people as possible. If you have 100 seats, you sell 300 memberships and, like a gym, hope everyone doesn’t all show up at the same time. A huge number of today’s “coworking spaces” follow the real estate model.

On the most basic level, the product of each coworking model looks like a space where individual business owners share amenities like wi-fi, desk space, 24/7 access, kitchen facilities, et cetera. Both concepts work very well to revitalize vacant spaces, and, in the words of a property manager I’ve collaborated with, ”bring life back to our buildings.”

The Coworking Consultant is for communities that go beyond revitalization.

Coworking can be about so much more than space. It’s about building a self-sustaining community of people embracing and supporting one another in a very organic way.

The second is a community model.

It starts with people and adds a space. In this very different version of coworking, you consciously cultivate a community, FIRST! In this model, the people are the most important asset, and the space is a facilitator for THEIR growth. The relationships formed go BEYOND the walls of the space and beneficially impact the surrounding neighborhoods.
